Viral Video Falsely Claims to Show Final Moments Inside South Korean Plane Before Crash

Claim: Video shows final moments inside the South Korean plane before it crashed at an airport on December 29, 2024.

Fact: The video is a combination of old, unrelated clips.

A video has recently been circulating across social media platforms, claiming to show the final moments inside the Jeju Air flight before it crashed on Sunday, December 29, 2024, at the Muan International Airport in southern South Korea. The audio in this video captures the passengers on the flight crying and shouting in fear.

A user with the handle @WorldCorner shared the video on YouTube, writing in Sinhala: “Breathing, knowing that in a moment you will turn to ashes… God, don’t let anyone, not even an enemy, feel such pain. 😔😔 South Korean plane crash.”

A TikTok user posted this video with a caption in Sinhala that reads: “R.I.P. 🙏🥺 Last-minute footage from inside the plane that tragically killed 177 people in South Korea.”

Another user on Facebook posted this video with a caption in Sinhala that reads: ‘The South Korean plane crash that occurred today happened just moments before the plane exploded. In those final moments, you must have thought you were saved.

Plane Crash Kills 179

Jeju Air flight 7C 2216, a South Korean budget airline, departed from Bangkok and was in the process of landing at Muan International Airport in southern South Korea on Sunday, December 29, 2024. The crash occurred during the landing. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport of South Korea confirmed that 179 out of the 181 people on board have been identified as deceased, with only two survivors currently hospitalised.

Fact Check/Verification

Newschecker did not find the viral video in any of the official news reports published by South Korea-based media outlets on the crash, raising our doubts.

We then conducted a reverse image search of keyframes of the video, which revealed that it is a combination of at least two different clips.

Through our keyframe analysis, we identified an old video that matches a large portion of the recent claims. This video was posted by a TikTok user with the handle @emirates.a380 on July 28, 2023, with the caption: ‘Scary turbulence video shared by a passenger who experienced it.’ The video and its caption do not provide any details about the flight or the incident. This particular video has been used in the recent claims regarding the South Korean plane crash.

Additionally, we found another video that matches the latter part of the claims. This video was posted on the official Instagram page of @okezonecom, an Indonesian online news portal, in 2022. The Instagram post is a clarification about a viral video that captured the atmosphere inside the cabin of Garuda Indonesia GA 608 on its Makassar-Palu route, where the aircraft encountered significant turbulence on Sunday, May 29, 2022.  However, the pilot managed to land the plane safely.

Conclusion

Video falsely claims to show the final moments before the South Korean plane crash. The viral video combines a TikTok clip from 2023, which doesn’t specify the airline or incident, and footage related to the Garuda Indonesia GA 608 turbulence on May 29, 2022, both of which occurred before the South Korean crash.

Result: False
