Claim: 5,000 rupee currency note is no longer legal tender in Sri Lanka.

Fact: The Central Bank of Sri Lanka has clarified that this claim is false.

A post claiming that the 5,000 rupee currency note will no longer be legal tender in Sri Lanka, is being widely shared on TikTok. The post was originally shared by the account of @hatton.suresh on October 6, 2024 & has received 15,300 likes and 324 comments till the time of publishing.

Fact check/Verification

Newschecker began the verification by conducting a keyword search on Google with the keywords ‘5000 rupees’, ‘currency note’, ‘Sri Lanka’, ‘legal tender’. However, we found no relevant results, raising our suspicion.

Further, we searched the official social media handles of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka for any official announcement in this regard, and found no such post. We also searched social media tools and websites of local banks in Sri Lanka, but that did not yield any results either.

We then reached out to a senior official from the Communications Department of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka who confirmed that the claim was completely false and that no such decision had been taken by Central Bank of Sri Lanka
