Fact Check
Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, the lone survivor of the London-bound Air India flight that crashed soon after takeoff in Ahmedabad, has been arrested on suspicion of his involvement in the incident.
The Additional Commissioner of Police, Sector-2, Ahmedabad City, clarified that Ramesh has not been arrested in any case, and the viral claim is fabricated.
On June 12, 2025, an Air India flight (A171) bound for London with 242 passengers departed from Ahmedabad Airport in Gujarat, India. Just minutes after takeoff, the aircraft crashed into the hostel building of BJ Medical College in the Meghaninagar area of Ahmedabad. The crash resulted in the deaths of approximately 241 people, with only one survivor.
The sole survivor, 40-year-old British national of Indian origin, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, who was seated in 11A, sustained injuries but miraculously survived. The tragedy sent shockwaves around the world.
In this context, a user on TikTok posted a video claiming that Vishwash Kumar Ramesh has been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the airplane crash incident. Similarly, the same claim has been widely shared on TikTok and Facebook. The posts can be seen here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.
A keyword search for “Vishwash Kumar Ramesh” and “arrested” on Google did not yield any credible reports stating that the passenger has been arrested for “his involvement in the plane crash,” as widely alleged.
We then scanned through the Indian official news sources, official X handles of the DGP Gujarat, Gujarat Police, and Ahmedabad Police, which did not carry any such information about his alleged arrest either.
The Newschecker India team then reached out to Jaipal Singh Rathore, Additional Commissioner of Police, Sector-2, Ahmedabad City, who clarified that Ramesh has not been arrested in any case, further confirming that the viral claim is fabricated.
We also found Vishwash Kumar Ramesh explaining his experience about the incident to the media. “The place where I landed was low… I took off the seat belt and for a moment, I was scared for my life. But I was near ground level, so I tried to get out… I can’t believe how I survived. I thought I would die. People died in front of my eyes,” he told the media. Prime Minister Modi also visited him at the Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad, where he was admitted after surviving the crash.
News reports also confirm that Ramesh was discharged and attended the funeral of his brother in Diu, a coastal town in India, on June 18, 2025. His brother had been seated beside him on the Air India flight that crashed on June 12, 2025. The news reports can be seen here, here, and here.
The viral claim that Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, the sole survivor of the Ahmedabad plane crash, has been arrested is entirely false. No credible evidence supports this allegation, and officials, including the Additional Commissioner of Police in Ahmedabad, have confirmed that Ramesh has not been arrested in any case.
