Did Teenage Cricketing Prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Meet PM Harini Amarasuriya? No, Viral Photos Are AI-Generated

Several photographs have been circulating on TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter), claiming to show teenage Indian cricketing sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi being honoured by Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya during a recent visit to Sri Lanka.

Evidence

1. We first did a keyword search using the following terms: “Vaibhav Sooryavanshi”, “Sri Lanka”, “Prime Minister”, “cricket”, “India”, and “Harini Amarasuriya”, and found no credible sources pointing us to such a meeting taking place between Amarasuriya and Sooryavanshi. No sources also led us to believe that Suryavanshi is currently visiting or has visited Sri Lanka previously. 

2. We then looked at the photos closely and noticed that the Sri Lankan national flag appears to be different, with a part of the flag missing. The photos also showed classic signs of AI-generation, such as the oversaturation of colour and blurry lines. 

3. We also noticed that some of the posts carry a disclaimer saying that the photos are AI-generated, even though they claim that the news is true. 

4. To further verify our doubts about the images being AI-generated, we checked them via AI detection tools, which gave us the following results:

5. Moreover, mainstream news media outlet NewsWire published on their social media that both the India Cricket A team and the Prime Minister’s office in Sri Lanka have confirmed that such a meeting never took place and that the photos are AI-generated. 

Thus, we were able to conclude that these viral images claiming that Sooryavanshi met Amarasuriya in Sri Lanka and was possibly honoured for his sportsmanship are false.
