We first checked whether weapons had in fact been recovered from Negombo Prison following the unrest. Using keywords such as “Negombo Prison,” “weapons,” and “prison clash,” we searched for official reports and credible media coverage.
We found that several mainstream media outlets reported police had recovered a large number of sharp weapons allegedly used by inmates to attack prison officers during the clashes. The reports also stated that inmates had broken into the prison kitchen, seized sharp objects from inside, and used coconuts from the kitchen to assault prison officials. These reports can be seen here, here, here, here and here.
Although mainstream media published videos and images of the recovered weapons, the viral photo circulating on social media did not appear in any of these reports. A video showing the actual weapons recovered from the prison can be viewed here.
We then checked the authenticity of the viral image using AI image detection tools. The results from WasitAI, ImageWhisperer, and Undetectable AI all indicated that the image was generated using artificial intelligence.
